Yesterday I was watching 3 Idiots with my dad and I suddenly remembered an instance which took place a week back.
I was going back home by the 6:30 bus, and there was guy sitting in one of the seats behind me. His voice was sharp enough to suppress the noise of the bus and his seat was close enough for me to clearly listen to his conversation on phone. I know overhearing someone else conversation on phone is a sin, but I just couldn't pull my brain out of that topic.
He started his conversation this way...
Of course he was talking in telugu, but I'd better convert it in english for you.
Man in the bus: How come you aren't getting any job, there are so many openings. Its been 6 months since you have graduated. What were you doing all these days?
Guy in the phone (Though i didn't listen to his conv, I could make out his response listening to the response from the man behind me): I have applied, but I did not get any replies.
Man in the bus: Send me your resume, I'll look out for something.
Guy in the phone: Do you know any company which has an opening for linux administrator. I wanna be a linux administrator.
Man in the bus: Look, I know you want to be a linux administrator, but at once you can't get a job like that, if you'll be very specific about linux administration then no one will hire you. Just go ahead and apply to all the companies who take in freshers.
Guy in the Phone: But I have given a certification for linux administration and I am interested to work only in that field.
Man in the bus: Look, Its already 6 Months since you have graduated and if you don't get a job, new batch of engineers will be out of the college and the you can never get a job. Are you not applying any jobs online??? Which site are you looking at for online jobs??
Guy in the phone: I am looking at some site (donno what site name he said)
Man in the bus: Okie.. Go ahead and apply to all the software companies who are looking out for freshers. Don't check for linux administrator's post. Change your resume. Put all general details and you can put one or two lines about your linux certification at the end. If they want to consider they'll. Just do as i say if you want a job and also send me a copy of your resume.
Guy in the phone: Somehow reluctantly the guy seemed to accept this person's words.
And the call ended.
Suddenly I donno what struck this man in the bus, he called back again and said,
"Do one thing... Remove the certification stuff completely from your resume. Apply like a normal fresher. Do not put any extra things, may be once you are selected you can tell them that you have done this certification too. Just do as I say . Don't put a single word about you linux certification.
And then the call ended again
I wanted to turn back and see who this idiot was who was giving this idiotic solution to that guy and ruining his life. Our very own Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra spent crores of rupees to tell people "Do what you are interested in and not what you are forced to" and finally what people tend to do is, watch the movie...enjoy the popcorn... and then drain everything in the theater's loo and come back into the real world doing the same old stupid stuff.
Well... All i can tell that person in the bus is "Mamu....get well soon" :)

Hmm... they don't require to drain it down the loo.. It never went through their thick heads anyway... They were busy laughing at the funny jokes and watching Kareena...
When I hear things like that .. I started telling myself "All izz Well" :)

I would not completely agree with the concept projected by 3 Idiots. Yes, It sure is very rewarding to have a career on one's passion, but it may not be financially rewarding always -its ok to live with a little less money but think of a women who wants to be a nurse - a very noble profession, But in India nurses can barely earn for a family of four. 3 Idiots shows an Indian setup but conveniently forgets the Indian society's inequalities and peoples thinking pattern
It maybe wrong for parents to force kids to pursue a particular career but it is necessary to educate them on the consequences of their decisions
